New Music Scotland AGM 2020

Join us at 1pm on Friday 4th Sept for our annual NMS day, this will taking place online via Zoom. We will begin with an introduction by conductor Ilan Volkovand our guest speakers:

  • Susanna Eastburn, Sound and Music,
  • Eve O'Donnell, Compuser & National SawDust
  • Kirsteen Davidson Kelly, Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
  • Pete Stollery, Composer & Sound Festival.

Following this there will the option to join our guests in smaller, more intimate panel discussions and concluding with the AGM.

Our theme for the day will be on the creative and artistic potential within the current pandemic situation we find ourselves in.

With it being a Friday afternoon we would also like to invite you to join us for a Zoom social on the conculsion of the AGM.

Ilan Volkov
Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra
Israel-born Ilan Volkov was appointed Principal Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in 2003, becoming Principal Guest Conductor in 2009. He took up his current appointment as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra in 2011.
A frequent guest with leading orchestras worldwide, he works regularly with a wide range of ensembles, including the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de Lyon, WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg, and Ensemble Modern.

Susanna Eastburn
Chief Executive of Sound and Music
Chief Executive of Sound and Music is the latest senior appointment in Susanna Eastburn's varied career that has included being Director, Music at Arts Council England from 2008-2012. Her first role was in music publishing, working at Music Sales Ltd with a number of leading composers including Judith Weir, Kaija Saariaho and Esa-Pekka Salonen. At the age of 31 she was appointed as Artistic Director and Chief Executive of the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, a role she fulfilled between 2000-2004, when she was selected to be a Fellow on the inaugural year of the Clore Leadership Programme, an initiative to identify and develop leadership in the UK’s cultural sector.

Eve O'Donnell
Artistic Producer Composer Initiatives, National Sawdust and Composer
Eve O’Donnell is an Irish composer, vocalist and producer, working and living in Brooklyn. Since receiving her Bachelor of Music Degree in Composition in 2012 she has worked in New Music internationally. As the Artistic Producer Composer Initiatives at National Sawdust, Eve produces the emerging composer mentorship initiatives: Hildegard Competition; Blueprint Fellowship; and New Works Commission. As a composer and vocalist Eve has performed and has had works performed, at many prestigious locations internationally including Banff Center for Arts and Creativity, Alberta, Canada; The Stone at The New School, National Sawdust, David Geffen Hall, New York; The Royal Albert Hall, London; The National Concert Hall, Dublin, The Cork Opera House, Cork; The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Scotland; and St. David’s Hall, Cardiff. She has two regional UK tours and two UK arena tours under her belt, along with an Irish national award for choral writing: Feis Ceoil. Eve is the curator and producer of the Irish musical platform #IrishOriginSeries, and she is a founding member of the Os Ensemble choir, for which composes works regularly on the topic of environmental impact through climate change. ve is an Irish producer, vocalist and award winning composer. Since receiving her Bachelor of Music Degree in Composition in 2012 she has worked in New Music internationally, most recently at Opus 3 Artists – a global leader in Classical artist management and booking – where she worked as an attractions and solo artists booking and touring Associate. Previous to this, she worked at Chamber Choir Ireland, and the Contemporary Music Center, Dublin; in the UK with Universal Classics and Jazz, London; and in New York at the Irish Arts Center, New Music USA, and now at National Sawdust.

Kirsteen Davidson Kelly​
Creative Learning Director, Scottish Chamber Orchestra
I began my career as co-founder of the six-piano ensemble Piano Circus, working with composers and artists to create, perform and record a unique new body of work, and establishing the group’s international education programme.  In 2014 I completed my PhD at the University of Edinburgh, using observation, survey, and neuroimaging (fMRI) methods to examine musical learning. I joined the Scottish Chamber Orchestra the same year and direct a wide-reaching Creative Learning programme of music and cross-artform projects in education, community and health settings.

Pete Stollery
Pete Stollery is a composer and sound artist and works at the University of Aberdeen where he is Professor of Composition and Electroacoustic Music. He is also Chair of sound, a new music incubator based in the north east of Scotland, which promotes practical community engagement in new music as well as promoting the annual soundfestival.
