NCEM YOUNG COMPOSERS AWARD 2022
The National Centre for Early Music and BBC Radio 3 invite you to write a new piece (3 - 4 minutes long) for string quartet, working alongside the BBC New Generation Artists – the Consone Quartet.
The Award is open to young composers resident in the UK up to the age of 25 and is judged in two age categories: 18 and under, and 19–25.
The Consone Quartet play ‘period instruments’ using gut strings. They invite you to enter into the musical sound world of one of their favourite composers, Fanny Mendelssohn. A talented pianist born at the beginning of the 19th century, Fanny wrote some 400 works but was never offered the acclaim that her brother Felix received. This is your opportunity to create a new piece which explores this fascinating time in musical history.
Shortlisted composers are invited to a collaborative day workshop in York led by composer Christopher Fox and Consone Quartet. It’s a fun day with a chance to learn a lot and to make great contacts with other composers. In the evening the shortlisted pieces will be performed with the judges present and the two winning pieces – one for each age category – will be announced. These winning pieces will be premiered and recorded for future broadcast at Stour Music festival on 26 June 2022.
