Giants, Causeways & Consequences (2020)
This song cycle, commissioned by the National Youth Choir of Northern
Ireland and funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, is a set of 3
contrasting songs, each based on a different myth / legend / location in
Northern Ireland.
1. Respect the Wee Folk! is based on the superstitions surrounding fairy
forts and fairy trees, found in various locations. These are regarded as
sacred sites for the wee folk, with entrances to the otherworld. Some
believe if you cross through a fairy fort or damage or cut down one of
these trees you’ll be faced with a lifetime of bad luck and misfortune.
2. Slieve Gullion, one of the mountains in the famous Ring of Gullion,
Slieve Gullion is said to be a sleeping giant, who should not be woken!
3. Finn McCool vs. Benandonner tells the story of the two rival giants, one
Irish, the other Scottish, whose rivalry leads to the building of a giant’s
causeway.
